Protect Science and Public Health—Defend the Clean Air Act
The Clean Air Act is under attack as is the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA’s) scientific finding that global warming pollution endangers public health.
The Supreme Court ruled that if the EPA determines scientifically that global warming emissions endanger public health and welfare, the agency must regulate those emissions under the Clean Air Act. But now three states, nine members of Congress, and a large number of industry groups that stand to profit from undermining the Clean Air Act, have filed lawsuits to stop the EPA from doing its job.
In addition, both the House of Representatives and the Senate have filed resolutions and bills to force the EPA to reverse these same scientific findings.
And if that wasn’t enough, many industry groups are also attacking newly proposed Clean Air Act smog regulations aimed at lowering ground-level ozone levels to a range considered safe by many scientists.
These efforts are all attempts to knock the teeth out of the Clean Air Act, which has prevented more than 400,000 premature deaths and millions of cases of respiratory and cardiovascular disease.
If you live in Alabama, Texas, or Virginia:
Unfortunately, your state has filed a lawsuit challenging the government’s scientific findings that global warming emissions harm public health and welfare. Please tell your attorney general and governor that you’re disappointed that they’ve chosen to undermine science and the Clean Air Act.
If you live in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, or Washington:
Thankfully, these 16 states have come out in defense of science and the Clean Air Act. They have filed a motion to intervene in the lawsuits challenging the scientific finding that global warming emissions harm public health and welfare. Please thank your attorney general and governor for protecting our health and environment, supporting independent scientific analysis, and helping to revitalize our economy, by intervening on behalf of the Clean Air Act.
If you live in Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming:
Your state has yet to sign on to the motion to intervene in the lawsuit challenging the scientific finding that global warming emissions harm public health and welfare. Please urge your attorney general and governor to protect our health and environment, defend independent scientific analysis, and help revitalize our economy, by joining state-led efforts to support the Clean Air Act.
