Policy Solutions for 2008 Presidential Candidates
The 2008 presidential election presents an important opportunity to educate the people who want to lead America--highlighting critical issues affecting our health, safety, and environment. The Union of Concerned Scientists is urging all candidates to:
- Global Warming: Implement an economy-wide cap on global warming pollution that grows more stringent over time to achieve an 80 percent reduction in U.S. emissions by mid-century. The cap should cover all major sources of global warming pollution, the emission allowances should be auctioned to polluters, and the proceeds should benefit the public. More...
- Nuclear Weapons: Announce it is U.S. policy to work toward a world free of nuclear weapons and declare that the sole purpose of U.S. nuclear weapons is to deter and, if necessary, respond to the use of nuclear weapons by another country. Unilaterally reduce the U.S. nuclear arsenal to less than 1,000 total warheads. Call for further global nuclear weapons reductions and meet within 6 months with Russia and within one year with other nuclear weapons states to pursue that goal. More...
- Political Interference in Science: Ensure the work of federal scientists will not be subject to political manipulation by creating transparency in federal agency decision-making processes. More...
- Food and Farming: Curb the feeding of important human antibiotics to food animals that are not sick, including encouraging Congress to pass the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act. More...
- Vehicle Fuel Economy: Ensure implementation of at least a 35 mile per gallon by 2020 fuel economy standard. More...
- Renewable Energy: Support a 15 percent national renewable energy standard requiring utilities to produce 15 percent of their electricity from renewable sources like the wind and sun. More...
