National Clean School Bus Grant Program Passes

In a major victory, years in the making, the National Clean School Bus Grant Program was passed as part of both the Energy and Transportation bills. The program was authorized $55 million a year for the first two fiscal years, and will continue for an additional three years with funding determined by Congress on a yearly basis. This is a huge leap forward, given the existing EPA program was only appropriated $7 million in 2006. Next year, UCS will advocate for the Appropriations Committee to give the program its full authorized amount. Some 3 million children in the United States ride aging, dangerously dirty school buses to school every day. Full funding of this important program will protect the health and safety of our children.
