New Hampshire Joins the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative

In June 2008, New Hampshire passed legislation to officially bring the state into the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), the nation's first multi-state, mandatory, market-based, cap-and-trade program to reduce global warming pollution from power plants. New Hampshire was the last of the Northeastern states to pass the legislation, which has already been adopted by Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont,. A special thank you to UCS activists who helped put the final pressure on New Hampshire legislators.

RGGI will go live in January 2009. It represents an important first step in tackling emissions reductions, and provides a strong policy template for the nation, demonstrating the viability and effectiveness of a market-based approach to level and then reduce global warming pollution.
