Renewable Energy Development Makes Progress in Rhode Island

Rhode Island's legislature overwhelmingly passed a bill that would give renewable energy developers the long-term contracts they need to finance wind farms, solar installations, and other renewable energy projects. UCS was part of the coalition of local environmental groups, utilities and renewable developer, and legislative leaders. Upon hearing that Governor Donald Carcieri was likely to veto the bill, we issued a press statement, sent a letter to the governor, and sent an alert to our activists, who made dozens of calls to the governor's office. Governor Carcieri vetoed it anyway. Though its session is now over, the legislature may reconvene to override this and other vetoes.
