What You Can Do
Send your members of Congress a personal holiday greeting card

Is she so naughty she deserves coal for the rest of her life?

Make your message memorable. Handwritten, personal greeting cards will have a big impact on your legislators—and it’s easy!

Simply grab one of the holiday cards you’re sending to your friends and family, get the mailing address of your senators and representative here, see our quick tips below to help you write your greeting, and then mail them your card.

Tell congress today that our kids and communities deserve better than coal.

Have a newly elected representative or senator? That's okay, you can still send them holiday cards. Simply mail them to the House and Senate addresses below. The congressional post office has assured us they will forward mail along to incoming legislators. If you're unsure, check our list of newly elected members of the 110th Congress.

  More Information

Tell me more about dirty coal and clean energy alternatives.

What is UCS doing to stop these proposed dirty coal plants?

Tips

  • Hand written greeting cards will appear more personal, but if your handwriting is hard to read—type your message.

  • Be sure to mention in your note that you are a constituent. Also include your return address so the member of Congress can confirm you live in their district and can send you a reply.

  • State clearly that you want your senator/representative to support clean, renewable energy alternatives to conventional coal plants.

  • The more personal your holiday card, the better. Tell your story—explain why clean energy is important to you and your family. Convey why renewables and energy efficiency, rather than coal, should be a top priority for Congress in the New Year.

Facts

  • Coal-generated electricity releases more global warming pollution than any other source of electricity.

  • Coal power plants release mercury that can poison children and pregnant mothers.

  • Each new coal plant will most likely operate for 40 years or more.

  • Clean energy alternatives, such as wind power, are already cost-competitive with coal and will be even more economical once carbon emissions are regulated.

  • Clean energy provides new, safer jobs than the coal industry and helps spur economic development.
