power uprate safety
overview

When the NRC issues an operating license for a nuclear power reactor, one of the terms of that license is the reactor’s maximum power level. In recent years, many plant owners sought and obtained license amendments increasing the maximum power levels to as much as 20 percent above the original levels.

Done properly, power uprates can retain the same safety margins at the higher power levels. But industry experience demonstrates that power uprates have not always been done properly. UCS seeks to fully remedy the safety margin erosion from improper uprates and to prevent future erosion at aging nuclear power reactors.
