Tires and Passenger Vehicle Fuel Economy

UCS Clean Vehicles Program Research Director David Friedman participated in the development of a report by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Transportation Research Board detailing the fuel economy ramifications of replacement tire fuel economy performance.  The report found that reducing rolling resistance of replacement tires in the fleet of U.S. cars and trucks by 10 percent is feasible. The report also found that this could reduce fuel consumption by one to two percent and save the nation one billion to two billion gallons of gasoline annually.  The report concludes that Congress should request that information on the energy performance of passenger vehicle tires be made publicly available.
