Compared to other major fuel economy proposals, the Hill-Terry legislation (H.R. 2927) does nothing to cut our oil dependence, saving just 9 days worth of oil.  Don’t make America wait until after 2020 to start saving more than a million barrels of oil a day.

The Hill-Terry proposal sets fuel economy targets that are substantially weaker than what has already passed the Senate and what has been proposed by President Bush.  Compared to fully implementing the Senate-passed CAFE provisions, Hill-Terry would increase U.S. oil consumption by 700,000 barrels per day – nearly as much oil as we currently import from Iraq and Kuwait, combined.  As a result, Americans would pay $14 billion more at the gas pump and emit an additional 121 million metric tons of global warming pollution.  That is simply bad policy.

Fuel economy has been stagnant for 20 years, don’t let automakers scare you into making Americans wait until after 2020 for real reductions in oil dependence.

Support the Senate CAFE compromise – Reject weak proposals such as Hill-Terry.
