A Special Note to Organic Consumers

Some consumers might wonder if they should continue to buy organic products in light of the contamination of the seed supply documented in Gone to Seed, a new UCS report. Among the many valued features of organic food is the option to avoid genetic engineering.

UCS strongly encourages consumers to continue buying organic food. Yes, despite their best efforts, some organic producers may occasionally end up with products containing low levels of genetically engineered material. Organic farmers cannot avoid engineered pollen blowing into their fields and cannot readily detect genetically engineered contaminants in the seed they buy.

But the organic industry is working hard to control sources of contamination and organic products remain the best option by far for consumers who want to avoid genetically engineered food.

No one tries harder than organic producers to give American consumers choice in the marketplace. We urge you to continue to support them.
