What the New Percentage of Emissions from Tropical Deforestation Means
New percentage of emissions from tropical deforestation not due to reducing deforestation worldwide
In response to a new analysis published in Nature Geoscience in November 2009, the estimate of the percentage of global warming emissions that is due to tropical deforestation has been revised. Deforestation and degradation are still a significant problem, however, and scientists and non-governmental organizations issued a press release explaining why the consensus concerning the percentage of emissions from tropical deforestation was changed from about 20 percent to "about 15 percent" of global emissions. The group included most of the leading experts on deforestation emissions.
For more detailed information and the list of organizations see the press release, Scientists and NGOs: Deforestation and Degradation Responsible for Approximately 15 Percent of Global Warming Emissions.
