Sound Science Initiative

 Science Education Day, Sacramento, CA

For over a decade the Sound Science Initiative (SSI) has been an effective email-based vehicle for scientists to respond to and influence fast-breaking media and policy developments on environmental issues of global significance, with a special focus on climate change and loss of biological diversity. Join the Sound Science Initiative Today. Our goal is to make it easy for you—a busy scientist—to stay informed about and to help raise public literacy and shape environmental policy on some of the most critical global environmental issues of our times.

Membership is free and open to science professionals and graduate students in the physical, natural and social sciences. Through email alerts, notice and updates SSI staff identify media or policy opportunities where scientists can take a suggested action, as well as provide members with in-depth, timely information on controversial topics or scientific developments. Join the Sound Science Initiative Today.

UCS has a long history of advancing responsible public policies in areas where science and technology play a critical role. At the urging of UCS's board of directors and under the leadership of former UCS board chair Dr. Henry Kendall, the Sound Science Initiative was established in response to the scientific community's growing concern over damage to the Earth's natural systems.

Special Member Services
Going beyond the basic news and information, SSI works to identify the special and critical niche that scientists can occupy in shaping environmental policy. To that end, special services are available to SSI scientists to improve their effectiveness, such as issue briefings, media and advocacy skills workshops, and opportunities to coordinate activities with other scientists in their area. SSI also provides thorough and accurate educational materials on selected climate change and biological diversity issues that scientists can use with students, reporters, policymakers, and the general public.

Join Us
Membership in SSI is open to science professionals and graduate students in the physical, natural, or social sciences. There is no membership cost associated with joining the SSI network. We offer this service free of charge as a way to keep busy scientists informed and to encourage scientists to actively participate in key policy debates. Join the Sound Science Initiative Today.
