FORESTS
Forests play an important role in maintaining water quality by preventing soil erosion and reducing sediment outputs. Forests also contribute to the water cycle by passing moisture from soils to the atmosphere through transpiration. Since forests use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and sequester or store carbon for long periods of time in the form of woody material, they are viewed as a viable means of helping to reduce carbon emissions to the atmosphere.
