GROUNDWATER Groundwater is stored underground in sands and gravels, and in cracks within rock formations. It occurs everywhere below the surface, but varies in amount and depth depending on the type of geologic formation, rock type, soil, and precipitation in the region. Groundwater is recharged through precipitation and seepage in areas such as the edges of wetlands, lakes, and streams. It is discharged by other areas such as springs. This movement of water is determined largely by gradient, soils, and barriers to flow.
