RIPARIAN ZONES
Riparian zones are vegetated areas found adjacent to waterways and lakes. Along streams, riparian zones perform several important functions, including shading, trapping sediments and nutrients from runoff, and contributing plant materials that are then used by fish, invertebrates and amphibians for food and shelter. These services are also provided to lakes and wetlands to a certain extent.
