Profile

As UCS's legislative representative for Clean Energy, Marchant Wentworth works to supply information about renewable energy to House and Senate staffers, the media, and activists.

Prior to joining UCS in April of 2002, Mr. Wentworth was the director of health care policy for the American Thoracic Society (ATS) where he conducted a campaign on the Patients' Bill of Rights and prescription drug issues. Prior to joining ATS, he was a legislative consultant whose clients included the American Lung Association, the Sierra Club, the Coastal Alliance, and the Anacostia Watershed Society. He has directed legislative coalitions on reforming pesticide policy and forest management. Prior to directing those campaigns, Mr. Wentworth served as the Legislative Director for the Izaak Walton League of America for nine years.

Mr. Wentworth first became involved with environmental issues while conducting water quality tests in the Potomac River in 1970. After realizing that something must be done about the pollution he found in the river, he became involved with Earth Day and has been active in the environmental movement ever since.

He holds bachelor's degree in biology from George Washington University and is the author of two books: Resource Recovery: Truth and Consequences, which analyzes the environmental hazards of large-scale solid waste processing facilities, and The Clear Creek Bike Book which presents both the mechanics and politics of bicycling. He has also written dozens of magazine articles on pollution topics.

Mr. Wentworth has been quoted in USA Today and has appeared as a guest on Pacifica Radio and MSNBC.
