FDA Reversal of Politically Tainted Knee Device Decision a ‘Brave and Important Step’

WASHINGTON (October 14, 2010) – In what the Union of Concerned Scientists called a “milestone for scientific integrity,” the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it will rescind its 2008 approval of a knee implant device. The agency admitted it made a mistake when it approved the device over objections from its scientists.

The following is a statement by Francesca Grifo, senior scientist and director of the UCS Scientific Integrity Program.

“The FDA has taken a brave and important step today. I am very happy to see that the agency is not only willing to admit its mistakes but has taken steps to correct them. This is a victory for scientific objectivity over political interference. It sends a message to thousands of government scientists that this administration will support them in the face of political and industry pressure. This should be the norm.”
