Community Supported Agriculture Programs Offer American Families New Option for Locally Grown, Sustainable Meat and Eggs

Many local CSA programs now offering consumers more than fruits and vegetables

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) today posted a new feature on its Web site to help conscientious consumers find locally grown, environmentally friendly meat and eggs. The feature describes a new trend in community supported agriculture programs that focus solely on providing meat and dairy products to consumers. While many American families already are enjoying the benefits of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables from traditional subscription farms, hundreds of meat and dairy versions have sprung up across the country over the last few years. (To see the feature, visit our CSA Fact Sheet page.)

In addition to describing how these meat subscription farms work, the Web feature profiles successful programs in Ohio, New York and California.

UCS food expert Karen Perry Stillerman is available to talk about these innovative meat subscription farms, explain how families can join one of these programs, and discuss sustainable agricultural practices more broadly. To set up an interview, contact Meghan Thornton at 202-331-6943 or mcrosby@ucsusa.org.
