Top U.S. Nuclear Power Industry Critic Returns to Union of Concerned Scientists

One of the country’s most respected nuclear power critics, David Lochbaum, returned to the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) yesterday after a year off.

Lochbaum, who has a bachelor of science degree in nuclear engineering, joined UCS in October 1996 as the director of the organization’s Nuclear Safety Project after working for 17 years in the nuclear industry. In February 2009, Lochbaum left UCS to relocate near his family in Tennessee, taking a job with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Over the last year, he taught classes in boiling water reactor technology at the agency’s Technical Training Center in Chattanooga.

Lochbaum, who will remain in Chattanooga, can be reached at (423) 468-9272 or dlochbaum@ucsusa.org. He rejoins UCS’s team of Washington, D.C.-based nuclear power experts, including Senior Scientist Edwin Lyman, a physicist in the organization’s Global Security Program; Nuclear Power and Climate Change Project Manager Ellen Vancko, who worked in the utility industry for more than 25 years; and legislative representative Robert Cowin.
