p o s i t i o n s | Nuclear Power Safety The nuclear power plants operating in the United States combine large amounts of energy with large quantities of highly radioactive material. If that mix is not handled properly, the resulting accident could cause harm to tens of thousands of people. For more than 25 years, UCS's nuclear safety program has monitored nuclear plant performance and taken action whenever safety margins were compromised. These actions have resulted in safety regulations being upgraded, plants being shut down, and modifications to plant emergency systems and procedures. Today, aging nuclear plants and economic pressures upon plant owners to slash costs provide another dangerous combination. Our nuclear safety program helps keep the nuclear industry and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission honest.
