22 Senators Urge Clean Energy and Climate Action
Statement by Lexi Shultz, Union of Concerned Scientists
WASHINGTON (March 22, 2010) – It was reported today that 22 Senate Democrats, led by Tom Udall of New Mexico, sent a letter to Majority Leader Harry Reid calling for action on a comprehensive energy and climate change bill.
Below is a statement by Lexi Shultz, director of advocacy at the Union of Concerned Scientists.
"Just last week more than 2,000 of the nation's most prominent scientists and economists released a letter calling on policymakers to require immediate, deep reductions in global warming emissions. The letter released today by 22 senators makes it clear that the message is getting through.
"Momentum is growing for the Senate to pass a comprehensive bill this session. Many of the senators who signed this letter have been hesitant in the past, but now they clearly recognize that the Senate's lack of action is harming American economic interests.
"It's easy to forget that there's a lot of common ground on this issue. This letter shows that senators from different regions of the country with different perspectives want to get the job done and pass a bill."
