COLUMBUS, OHIO (December 22, 2016)—Today, Gov. Kasich vetoed House Bill 554, legislation that would freeze Ohio’s renewable energy and energy efficiency standards for two years.
Below is a statement by Melanie Moore, Midwest field director at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).
“Governor Kasich showed real leadership today. By vetoing House Bill 554, he has sent a strong message to the clean energy market that Ohio is serious about creating jobs and spurring investment in that industry.
“The Union of Concerned Scientists has been working in coordination with local experts and activists for several years to lift the renewable energy standard freeze to create a win-win situation for the state’s economy and the environment. Governor Kasich’s actions have shown that he too believes Ohio families and businesses benefit when the state’s energy policy includes strong renewable energy and energy efficiency commitments.
“Reinstating these policies means the state can continue to work toward creating jobs and growing the economy, all while reducing harmful global warming emissions to better protect our children, public health, and natural resources. Ohio can now join other states as they charge forward towards a clean energy future for our nation.”
