Union of Concerned Scientists Releases “Scientific Integrity Curriculum Guide”
WASHINGTON (May 14, 2007) - The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) released the first guide for high school and college instructors that will introduce students to the growing problem of political interference in science.
"The next generation of citizens and scientists needs to understand the causes and consequences of political interference in the work of federal scientists," said Francesca Grifo, director of the Scientific Integrity Program at UCS. "Our colleagues in academia have an important role to play. The curriculum guide will give them the tools they need to bring this important issue into the classroom."
The Scientific Integrity Curriculum Guide provides teachers with lecture slides, worksheets, homework assignments, essay suggestions, and links to other resources. The guide is being released on the first day of "Whistleblower Week," a public awareness campaign sponsored by over 50 public interest groups pushing Congress to pass the Whistleblower Enhancement Act. The legislation would give federal scientists the right to expose political interference in their research without fear of retribution.
