Letter to NRC on groundwater protection concerns (04/2010)

Workers at Vermont Yankee recently discovered that radioactively contaminated water had been leaking from underground piping. This discovery followed similar discoveries at Indian Point, Oyster Creek, Salem, Braidwood, and many other nuclear power plants. In March 2010, the NRC formed a task force to examine its regulations and policies for protecting the public from leaks and spills of radioactively contaminated water. UCS followed up our verbal comments made to the NRC's task force during a public meeting with a letter urging the NRC to enforce longstanding regulations against uncontrolled and unmonitored releases of radioactive materials from nuclear power plants.
