Global Support for New START
On April 8, 2010, the United States and Russia signed the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) agreement, which will reduce each nation's arsenal of deployed strategic nuclear weapons to 1,550 treaty-accountable warheads. On May 13, the treaty and its supporting documents were officially submitted to the U.S. Senate, which along with the Russian Duma must provide its advice and consent to ratification of the treaty in order for it to enter into force.
How have U.S. allies and countries around the world reacted? At the Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference at the United Nations, which began May 3, 2010, over 50 nations voiced their support for the treaty, praising it as an important step forward for arms control and disarmament. The Union of Concerned Scientists compiled a selection of these statements here.
