The United States Missile Defense Agency’s two Space Tracking and Surveillance System (STSS)’s demonstration satellites were launched in September into low-earth orbit. The two research satellites, orbiting in 1350 km circular orbits, are meant to work together to provide stereo viewing capability. The suite of onboard visible and infrared sensors is designed to detect the launch of a missile and track it as it travels through space; the sensors may also provide space surveillance data on objects in orbit. Current U.S. missile-warning satellites are in geosynchronous orbit and use non-imaging infrared sensors. By being closer to Earth’s surface and having sensors at a range of wavelengths, STSS is intended to track warheads and decoys during the midcourse phase of flight if they are emitting a strong enough visible or infrared signal.
