WASHINGTON (January 11, 2017)—Today, ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson will appear before the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations (SCFR) to answer questions about his nomination for Secretary of State. During his 10-year tenure as CEO of ExxonMobil, Tillerson sought to obstruct public officials, shareholders and civil society groups’ scrutiny into the company’s actions on climate change—an unbefitting history for someone who may soon be tasked with directing the nation’s global efforts on climate, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).

Below is a statement from Kathy Mulvey, Climate Accountability Campaign Manager at UCS.

“Tillerson is a twisted choice for secretary of state and future leader of international climate action. We shouldn’t have to wonder if our future secretary of state will bolster U.S. leadership on climate or protect watchdog groups for speaking about one of the most pressing issues of our time. Yet, we have every reason to.”
