This year’s Science Idol is Raul de la Nuez of Miami, Florida. His calendar graces the cover of the 2011 Scientific Integrity Calendar, as well as the month of June.
Raul has degrees from the Higher Institute of Cuba and the Escuela Nacional de Arte de Cuba and is a man of many talents.
Besides being an artist, painter and caricaturist, he is an art director for soap operas for Venevision production and Univision. In the past ten years, he has designed over 20 soap operas in the US, Venezuela and Mexico.
Raul has participated in many cartoon contests around the world—from Syria to Colombia—and has received several cartooning awards. His work has been published in many newspapers, including O Farelo in Galicia and Vision Iberoamericana in Miami.
Entering Science Idol is his "small contribution to a noble cause," Raul said. One of his cartoons received an honorable mention in 2007’s contest and appeared as a bonus cartoon in the 2008 Scientific Integrity Calendar.
Previous cartoons of his also appeared in November in the 2009 SI Calendar and January of the 2010 Calendar. Other work of Raul's can also be seen at his cartoon cartoon website and his art website.
