Americans for Prosperity, a special interest group founded and funded by the fossil fuel billionaire Koch brothers, has been busy engaging in attacks on renewable electricity standards and regional approaches that can help states cost-effectively meet their targets for reducing carbon emissions under the Clean Power Plan, which will establish the first-ever national limits on carbon emissions from existing power plants.
AFP has used “misleading figures” to claim that requiring utilities to use more renewable energy could cause electricity prices to “skyrocket” by as much as 40 percent. In reality, the average additional cost of complying with renewable electricity standards in 25 states equaled less than one percent of retail electricity rates from 2010-2012.
Similarly, AFP has claimed that RGGI could drive up electricity rates by as much as 90 percent. Meanwhile, Koch brothers have contributed millions of dollars to special interest groups that spread disinformation about climate science.
AFP’s president has said that “If we win the science argument, I think it’s game, set, and match…”
