Concern for Lives in the Middle East

Statement by Johanna Chao Kreilick, President, Union of Concerned Scientists

“We are watching the unfolding events in Israel and Palestine with grave concern and fear for the lives of the many civilians on both sides.

“Terrorist actions against civilians and collective punishment of millions, including many children, is completely at odds with human dignity and international law. The United Nations has sounded the alarm: We are now on the verge of witnessing a massive humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

“We urge world leaders, including President Biden, to push for a de-escalation of the violence and seek a path of resolution that protects civilian lives. Hundreds of children in Gaza and Israel have died already—there is no justification for that kind of inhumanity.”
